Jane can’t believe her eyes … there’s an elephant on Elfin Lake. Not just any elephant, either. It’s Gaia. And Jane knows her—from a long, long time ago.
When a film company arrives in Cedar’s Ridge to shoot a movie, Jane, Amy, and Flory get after-school jobs as production assistants. They’ve just started their senior year, and while talk at school is of graduation and future plans, the buzz around town is all about the film.
The only person who’s not starstruck is Jane Ray. She senses something’s amiss with the animals on set, but she and her friends can’t seem to prove it. As Jane watches Gaia the elephant kneeling, walking, and trumpeting on command, she feels a fury building on behalf of this wild creature who has spent nearly the whole of her life in captivity. When a mahout from the jungles of Asia reveals that Gaia’s life is on the line, it’s a screen siren who holds the key to Gaia’s rescue–except it’s in code.
Meanwhile, journalist Noah Stevenson is working up the courage to talk to Jane after a year of admiring her from afar, while Amy’s brother Mike is snail-mailing love letters from Cortes Island. In a wild and moving climax, shoes–and heads–roll, paths diverge, Flory freaks out, and ghosts appear in broad daylight along with the truth.
